yes its thats time. Nearly at the end of 2009. what were your top ten. Maybe its one crucial album that changed your life you want to nominate. maybe its a chance to get an XTC album in a contempory chart. or do you just want to nominate the strokes as the band who made the whole decade happen.
Only one rule. Release date has to be between jan 1st 2000 and 31st Dec 2009... _________________ Blonde pride |

I don't get "out" much musically, tend to listen to new stuff by old favorites more than brand new bands, so my list reflects that.
Two Against Nature - Steely Dan
Everything Must Go - Steely Dan
Sea Change -Beck
Uninvited, Like The Clouds - The Church
The Power To Believe - King Crimson
Liars - Todd Rundgren
The 3-Dimensional In-Popcycle Dream - The Pillbugs
Buzz For Aldrin - The Pillbugs
2 - Espers
Must be forgetting some...
Some more, although it still has not been released in the US
I'm OK, You're OK - Jason Falconer
and
Long Distance - Ivy
The Noise Made By People - Broadcast _________________ I know what it's like to be Peter Fonda.

Most of the stuff I've bought this decade is from the 90's, I'm generally 5-10 years behind, but here's 10 artists' discs:
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Pete Yorn - musicforthemorningafter
The Go-Betweens - Oceans Apart
WILCO - Kicking Television (live)
The EELS - Meet the Eels (compilation)
of Montreal - The Sundlandic Twins
Belle and Sebastian - the Life Pursuit
The Decemberists - Picaresque
XTC - Wasp Star
Andy Partridge - FW #6
(I also like the Modest Mouse and Shins discs that have been mentioned, but I don't own them - my son does, I also like his Waiting for the Siren's call by New Order) _________________ "a little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants,"

The single album that changed my music listening the most in this decade?
1. Polysics - Polysics or Die!!!
But that's actually a compilation- so no wonder it's better than a single album. I guess my favorites of their single albums are Neu and Now Is The Time, but by themselves they obviously can't measure up to a "best of", If I were to chose one or the other to be in this list I think I'd place it after Golden Ocean or Stankonia.
The rest of my top choices would be...
2. XTC- Wasp Star
3. TMBG- NO!
4. 50 Foot Wave - Golden Ocean
5. Outkast - Stankonia
6. Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog
And then a much too large list of others of similar quality. I'll keep a countdown motif but these are all very close in preference.
7. Brazillian Girls - Brazilian Girls
8. Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Love Bad News
9. The Polyphonic Spree - The Beginning Stages of...
10. Death Cab For Cuite - Transatlanticism
10. Postal Service - Give Up
12. Bjork - Medúlla
13. Cee-lo - Cee-lo Green and His Perfect Imperfections
14. Pina - Quick Change
15. His Name Is Aive - Detrola
16. Damien Rice - O
17. Wax Poetic - Nublu Sessions
18. Gillian Welch - Time (The Revelator)
19. Tomahawk - Anonymous
20. Sufjan Stevens - Greetings From Michigan, The Great Lakes State
21. Nellie McKay - Get Away From Me
22. Tin Hat Trio - The Rodeo Eroded
23. Nickel Creek - This Side
24. Peeping Tom - Peeping Tom
25. Daft Punk - Discovery _________________ ...in my pants

Humbug - Arctic Monkeys.
Jury's still out for me but I think they're about to come through the door with the little slip of paper that means the judge can take off his black cap and the guards can undo the cuffs.
Much less immediate than either predecessor it sounds a lot more like The Last Shadow Puppets than the cheeky Monkeys. That's not a bad thing as it shows how Alex is maturing as a songwriter but the sheer infectiousness and humour of the first album seems mostly to have faded (except maybe "what came first - the chicken or the dickhead?").
It helped that I saw them live last week (Wembley Arena alas but with good seats) and the new songs punched their weight. They've all got something to contribute and Cornerstone is just excellent. But, did I imagine it, or was Alex's heart not quite in it at NW10?
It wouldn't surprise me if this were the last AM album and the next we see of Alex Turner is his album of Bacarach covers. Might not be a bad thing.
Sorry - I know this is not a Monkeys thread but I've decided to put Humbug in my top ten after all. |
