I touch the dream,I hold the dream,I held the dream... |

"Its a desperate game we play,
Throw our souls, our lives, away.
Wounds that can't be mended
And debts that can't be paid.
Oh, I played and I got stung,
Now I'm biting back my tongue
And I'm sweeping out the footprints where I strayed."
"Keep Your Distance" - Richard Thompson
Its amazing to me that he could sum up something so large and so overwhelming in two short stanzas. That last line chokes me up sometimes. _________________ Yours sincerely, wasting away. |

...here's an old fave of mine...
My brother knows Karl Marx
He met him eating mushrooms in the public park
He said: "What do you think of my manifesto?"
"I like your manifesto, put it to the testo"
Took me down to meet the anarchist party
Met a groovy guy, he was arty farty
Said: "I know a little Latin, a kissen an a kai
Said: "I dunno what it means", I said: "Neither do I"
Eat natural food baked twice daily
Fill your nostrils up with gravy
Don't drink tea and don't drink coffee
Cover your chin in Yorkshire toffee
Dancing in the disco, bumper to bumper
Wait a minute:
"Where's me jumper? Where's me jumper? Where's me jumper?"
I know I had it on when I had my tea
And I'm sure I had it on in the lavatory
Pure new wool and perfect stitches
Not the type of jumper that makes you itch, oh no
Dancing in the disco, go go go
Dancing in the disco, oh no, oh no, oh no
Dancing in the disco, go go go
Dancing in the disco, oh no, oh no
Dancing in the disco, bumper to bumper
Wait a minute:
"Where's me jumper? Where's me jumper? Where's me jumper?
Where's me jumper? Where's me jumper?"

the song of an excellent band that's been together for over 7 years with little mass recognition.
Opportunity is winding down,
no one hears you when you're in your 30's now
cause gravity can only pull you down
there's no shame in desperation.

Cain got a milk-eyed mule from the auction
Abel got a telephone
And even the last of the blue-eyed babies know
That the burning man is the color of the end of day
And how every tongue that gets bit always has another word to say
Cain bought a blade from some witch at the window
Abel bought a bag of weed
And even the last of the brown-eyed babies see
That the cartoon king has a tattoo of a bleeding heart
There ain’t a penthouse Christian wants the pain of the scab, but they all want the scar
How every mouth sings of what it’s without so we all sing of love
And how it ain’t one dog who’s good at fucking and denying who he’s thinking of
Cain heard a cat tumble limp off the rooftop
Abel heard his papa pray
And even the last of the black-eyed babies say
That every saint has a chair you can borrow and a church to sell
That the wind blows cold across the back of the master and the kitchen help
There’s a big pile of innocent bones still holding up the garden wall
And it was always the broken hand we learned to lean on after all
How God knows if Christ came back he would find us in a poker game
After finding out the drugs were all free but they won't let you out the door again

She looked good
In the available light
She was somebody’s Saturday night
She said it ain’t wrong
But it’s not quite right
Guess it’s somebody’s Saturday night

That my head on the door
Was a dream. |

If he wasn't such an amazing songwriter, Robyn Hitchcock could certainly earn a living as an author of note (just read any of the short stories that appear in some of his album liners). As a matter of fact, he has been working on a book for a few years now and when it finally sees the light of day I'll be first in line...
Here's a verse from 'Vibrating' from 1988's Globe of Frogs:
And in an adoring pose he shriveled up and died
Until his bones were stems upon the grass they dried
And made an alphabet of white upon the green
And it was beautiful and some would say obscene
