Judging by my two recent trips to the theater, that rule would exclude about 90% of movies here in the U.S.! _________________ I'm gonna get a replacement, because I'm so hip. |

I quite liked this film .... could have done with a bit more emphasis on the Basterds themselves. Be prepared for a lot of subtitle reading unless you are fluent in French or German. I gave it two thumbs up (Mr. Suzi too so 4 thumbs up I guess) |
You can add my two thumbs, too. It's vintage Tarantino, which for me is not always a good thing, but it was more beautifully shot and better acted than most of his films, IMHHHHO. That Christoph Waltz is like a whirlwind. In four languages. The portrayal of Joseph Goebbels is hilarious. And the ending made me feel better than I expected it to.
It's uncomfortably irreverent. But I liked it anyway. There are some things you can't make beautiful through art, and the Holocaust is one of them. Fortunately Quentin Tarantino's films are hardly art. This is pure revenge fantasy. _________________ "." |

I watched "Anvil, The Story Of Anvil" on VH1 last night. Compared to a real life Spinal Tap, this documentary follows this 30 year old metal band's sad and determined quest to finally break through. Loved it. _________________ I know what it's like to be Peter Fonda. |

Saw Bright Star last night. I thought it was a wonderful film--it's essentially plotless, that seems fitting in light of the fact that at its most basic level it's a movie about poetry. Visually it's quite stunning. And Ben Whishaw's recitation of "Ode to a Nightingale" during the end credits alone was worth the ten bucks. (Okay, 20 bucks; I paid for my date, as well.) _________________ "." |

And in case you haven't noticed. The Venture Brothers, The best cartoon on TV has returned for a new (half) season.
And if you're like me and don't have Cable TV to watch it on you can catch it on Adult Swim's video site Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! |
I haven't actually seen this weeks but last week's was a monumentally weird non-linear affair made for comic book geeks and tailored strictly for people who have followed the show (resolving the questions from the finale) _________________ ...in my pants |

I was going to see "Bright Star" last weekend with my mother, but it was already gone from theaters! Instead we saw "Where The Wild Things Are", which I found totally absorbing (Mom liked it too). The dialogue is inventive and multi-layered (especially the cross-talk between the monsters) and the kid who stars in the movie is fantastic.
I didn't grow up with the book—I only read it once from one of my nephews, I think—but it's a powerful story. So powerful I thought that the kids in the theater would get very upset, but they actually seemed enthralled, and they got most of the off-kilter humor as far as I could tell. _________________ I'm gonna get a replacement, because I'm so hip. |

The Hurt Locker was mighty good. The least jingoistic Iraq War film I've been exposed to in ages. Jeremy Renner is a terrific actor (a kind of poor man's Daniel Craig, but in between Bond films, I don't mind, esp. since the last one was shite.)
For TV, I'm into Glee right now - purely for Jane Lynch. She really needs her own show.
And I didn't mind District 9. It's amazingly well done for little money and the emotions went from disgust to cheering for the protagonist, which is also a rare thing.
I did love Inglorious Basterds, too. It's like fanfiction for history buffs. Very good as long as you take it with a grain of salt. |

Yeah, that was the bright spot of District 9 -- was no moment of shit where the violins swelled and his heart grew three sizes, just a not-very-bright guy waking up and starting to take right actions.
Otherwise, it was Blackhawk Down meets The Fly stir-fried with Alien Nation, Watermelon Man, and all the weapons from Unreal Tournament 2004.
But I did have to laugh out loud at the flying pig beatdown. You just don't see that enough these days. _________________ A porch is the only real reward you need after a long summer's day. — Shawn Sell |

I liked the Mad Men finale so much I watched it twice. I just hope AMC doesn't fuck up The Prisoner.
And just when I think South Park is losing its edge, it comes back with a hilarious episode like the Harley Davidson riders. |

TV
The new stuff really isn't impressing me too much this year. I think the only new shows I'm committed to are Flash Forward, Community and The Cleveland Show- none are masterpieces, just decent examples of their genre's. Maybe V will be alright as well.
Never watched Glee because it just seemed like I wouldn't like it. I really should give it a chance though.
I think I might give FX's Sons of Anarchy a chance as well
Modern Family has too much "uncomfortable" comedy for me to watch, although I applaud it's originality.
I've completely given up on a couple other shows this year. American Dad has gotten too annoying to watch and Heroes has become far too boring to watch.
So I'm left mostly with some older NBC sitcoms and CBS and Fox procedurals.
Talking of which, the original CSI is still good and because of the "CSI:Trilogy" November Sweeps crossover event I watched CSI: Miami this week- wow, that one is even worse than I remembered. Caruso as avenging savior cop, beautiful people wearing beach clothes in the Police station, lab montages not only accompanied with the requisite techno music but bright flashing lights and Sci-fi console screens as well. Apparently even the crime lab is a disco in Miami. All that and a Grizzly Bear in the Everglades.
Next: CSI: New York, which I used to watch and while not obnoxious like Miami, often very generic. _________________ ...in my pants |
