"We've been having so much fun rehearsing that I feel now is the time to
officially introduce my fab new band the TIN SPIRITS, whom you can
actually hear LIVE at ye olde Riffs Bar at Greatfield, near Swindon, on
Thursday May 14th 2009.
"We'll be playing a mixture of covers of rock obscurities, prog classics
and maybe a few XTC songs into the bargain. All guitars, all of the
time; keyboards are RIGHT OUT.
"Admission? A lousy three quid. Are we kidding?? No! We wants to be
rockin' a full house this time...
"So whether you come to cheer us on or jeer at our efforts, an evening's
entertainment is guaranteed for all.
"See yez down Riffs, then."
Riffs Bar bills the event thus:
"The TIN SPIRITS feat. XTC's DAVE GREGORY!
"A new project featuring XTC guitarist Dave Gregory will see its first
full gig here at Riffs. A prog rocker's dream, the guys play songs from
bands including Yes, King Crimson, Rush, Steely Dan, Genesis, Radio Head
and many others plus you'll hear XTC songs never before played live by
any member of the band"
I'm already commited to be elsewhere, but from the snippet we saw a few months back, this promises to be great. |

I'm so happy for Dave!
I've mixed emotions here. He's such a great player and outclasses a vast majority of players out there - by a wide margin as well (I'm also a guitarist and love his playing). You'd love to see him and his playing get the maximum amount of exposure possible - because he deserves it, but are happy just to see him out there doing it again.

Yes my ears are still ringing after a blistering set last night at Riffs from Tin Spirit......Dave on guitar Daniel on guitar and vocals Mark on base and lead vocals and Doug on drums.....treated us to:
(but not in the right order)
Frankenstein: Edgar Winter
Tom Sawyer: Rush
The Stealer:Free
Riders on the Storm: The Doors...this version absolutely mindnumbingly gorgeous!
The Ocean : Led Zeppelin
Orange County Lumber Truck:Frank Zappa
Red :King Crimson...even better than the Vic's version...they have been practising!
Dream Brother:Jeff Buckley
The King is Half Undressed:Jellyfish
Back in NYC: Genesis
Reelin in the Years: Steely Dan...eat your heart out Walter Becker Dave blisters the guitar intro!
Paranoid Android: Radiohead
Roundabout:Yes...Daniel had an electro acoustic guitar on a stand and played both this and electric guitar during the song...highly ambitious but effective!!
Earn Enough for us.....yeay XTC!
The Mayor of Simpleton......apparently the first time Dave has played this live!
Scissor Man ....Dave fluffed the opening riff twice before nailing it to the delight of the crowd!
and last but very much not least
Towers of London.
Steve (redwood1) was there and recorded both audio and video.......I am sure he will post links at some stage.
Dave was charm personnified and gracefully signed my new Dukes cd inner covers (as Plum of course!)which he had not seen before! Thanks Dave!
The only downside....Ian (e.i.e.i.owen) was in the audience at the back and I missed the chance to get him to sign too because I was too busy watching at the front , and he left before the end....Doh!!
Actually It was sooo LOUD .....this morning....I think my fillings are all loose....worth it though!! |

Hello everyone,
I've posted a couple of the videos that I took at the Tin Spirits gig last
Thursday on YouTube. It's the first time I've uploaded anything like that;
if anyone hears that any of the band are unhappy about this, please let me
know and I'll take them down pronto. I didn't get a chance to ask them
(actually I hadn't planned on uploading them).
I've uploaded Earn Enough For Us:

and The Mayor Of Simpleton.

They focus on Dave because I was trying to zoom in on what he was doing on the guitar.
Yes I know I'm sad. I'm sure someone else will up footage of the whoel band at some point.
They were shot on my girlfriend's compact camera so they're OK but not brilliant.
These cameras don't handle low light very well. The sound is a bit distorted too -
the mic couldn't handle the sound pressure. There's a fair amount of
shake because I was suffering from that involuntary laugh you get when
you see something really good.
Due to the sh*te way the camera records video, I knew I only had space for
about 20 Mins of footage. So I only got the XTC songs. In fact, I missed
the second half of Towers Of London, which didnt please me too much...
I'll try and get around to uploading Scossor Man and the portion of Towers soon.
I enjoyed the night immensely. The highlights were Dave almost being caught off
guard when they started the very first song, him fluffing the start of Scissor Man
a couple of times and, come to think of it, just about everything they did all
night long.
One thing to mention was the volume level - it was very loud. Actually, that's not
quite accurate. It was f*cking deafening. I couldn't decide if it was fun or
mad. It was so loud, that I think I could smell blood in my nose at one point.
I'm defitely buying some musicians ear plugs for next time, and taking some
cotton wool to shove up my nose. A bath sponge to bite down on might be handy too.
It actually made my girlfriend ill. She had to leave half way through Towers Of
London (the last song). So I was put in the difficult position of having to decide
whether to follow her to check what was going on, or listen to Dave finish playing
one of the songs I'd grown up with at an ear bleeding level... I'm only slightly
ashamed to admit I stayed put (!). She felt a bit punch drunk the next day but by
the following evening was OK... Is it wrong that I found this funny???
Enjoy the vids.

You must have been the couple originally sitting behind me, then my bro gave up his seat for your girlfriend, then I showed you a short stool going spare? I didn't find it terribly loud ... I must be deaf already! Lol! Cracking night! |

Ignore Burnt Peas......she lost her hearing from too much loud music years ago.....
I agree Simon the sound levels were too loud for me at times and I was wearing industrial earplugs! But to be honest if you are the guy at the front on the short stool you were a foot from me and we were right in front of the speakers!
Thank you for the vid links I am sure the band will be well flattered that you have gone to the trouble of uploading them and making them available to a wider audience. |

Hello again,
I've YouTube'ed the footage of the other 2 XTC songs the Tin Spirits played now.
They can be found here along with the first two:

Be prepared to be disappointed with the Towers of London video (the video not the performance) - it only includes the first third of the song. The memory card in the camera ran out of space... Hopefully someone else will have the rest...?
P.S. Yes I was the one on the midgets bar stool at the front. |

Hi peeps It's been a while since I visted the site but have been very busy. I went to The Tin Spirits gig and had a really great time, meeting up with other forum members. Thanks to Simon for uploading his vids to You Tube. Also I have to agree with many who said the sound was loud and sometimes distorted, but then again Bloody great to hear such great songs done live with the band including Dave Gregory. Well tonight I have been converting my audio from the gig and videos to add to Simon's excellent offerings. If you go to my E-snips folder I hope you will be able to listen to each of the tracks from the whole gig. Sorry for any distortion but I can only record what was coming from the speakers.
The set list in order is as follows
Tin 000 Orange County Lumber Truck:Frank Zappa
Tin 001 : Frankenstein : Edgar Winter
Tin 002 Introducing The Band
Tin 003 Dream Brother:Jeff Buckley
Tin 004 The Stealer:Free
Tin 005 King is Half Undressed:Jellyfish
Tin 006 Back in NYC: Genesis
Tin 007 Earn Enough for us : XTC
Tin 008 The Mayor of Simpleton :XTC
Tin 009 Riders on the Storm: The Doors
Tin 010 The Ocean : Led Zeppelin
Tin 011 Red :King Crimson
Tin 012 Reelin in the Years: Steely Dan
Tin 013 Tom Sawyer: Rush
Tin 014 Roundabout: Yes
Tin 015 Paranoid Android: Radiohead
Tin 016 Scissor Man : XTC
Tin 017 Towers of London: XTC
Anyway if you want the audio only (the whole gig ) go here and you can listen to all of these tracks. XTC ones are numbers 7 and 8 then 16 and 17 but hope you will enjoy the whole show. I will upload video shortly to you tube. See ya Steve W

Hi again.
I have started uploading video files to You Tube and they will appear over the next few hours. As I type this 2 are already there, Orange and Earn Enough, and to follow will be Frankenstein, Stealer, Undressed, NYC, Simpleton, Riders, Ocean, Reeling. The camera tried to focus in and out mostly on the guy's head in front, lol, but I hope you will get a general feeling from these Videos of the great gig that night. Orange ends sharply and goes straight into Frankenstein and some of the other videos also have no breaks between songs but I split them best as I could to upload.
Thanks to Dave and the other members of Tin Spirits for allowing the filming and for posting on the net. To all those that were not there enjoy, and hope you can make the next show. Dave hinted there may be a gig later in the year at the Vic in Swindon. Hope to see you there. By the way, anyone wanting to listen to more extended live gigs, examples of which are on the e-snips website, can pm me and maybe arrange a visit if you are ever in the Swindon area..
See ya Steve W |
