I LOVED IT! That was one of the nicest things anyone could do to send that to me! I read it a few times, really great book, learned a lot and enjoyed it enormously.

Have you got a copy of the Lifehouse Demos (I am sure you do...) but if you don't let me know and I will burn a copy for you as a tiny way to pay you back for your kindness.

Hi Malibu - glad you found us. Yeah, I guess we all ended up as deleted members when the Idea forum crashed.

you're right, blushift. I didn't know it crashed, but that must have been hard. When I stopped being a regular, it took me about 5 days to get out of the habit of looking in. Imagine how hard that is to lose all the conversations while they are going on. How did that happen?

The provider for the Idea forum (Digital Forest, I think) had a server crash. With_No_Backup. After about a week, it started looking bad for retrieving all that history. We were able to get into PMs for a brief time, so I started up this forum on a whim and started sending out PMs to anyone I could to try to get word out that there was another place we could use to keep in contact. I also had some email addresses of a few members to also spread word. After we found out that the Idea forum was gone, this one sort of became the interim gathering place.

A few months ago, Spastic graciously took the reins for this board so that I could contemplate my belly button. Very Happy

And as not to confuse or alienate newer people (there are a few).

Malibu69 was formerly known as The Cutter, early Idea Forum poster, promoter of The Tower game, Italian-American Chicagoan now Italian-American Italian if that makes any sense. Obviously fondly remembered.

and most noteworthy: never learned to post a picture! Luddite till the bitter end! But who did win the Tower of Song? I remember Simps and Turtle were plotting to get Steely Dan to always beat the Kinks, and poor Nick Cave never stood a chance Sad

I think cicada may still have the records saved somewhere but I'm not completely sure.

there were two, right? The first one was won my The Kinks "Waterloo Sunset" IIRC but I can't remember who won the second. And I can't remember who won the Tower of albums either. Confused

There remains scattered records of the Idea forum via the Internet Archive:

But what is there barely scratches the surface.

actually, looking at the archive it looks like tower 2.0 was still going when the place crashed, so there was no winner.

i have a tower summary spreadsheet last saved on 11/30/2007, although i believe the data are much older than that. i also have a tower summary from 2003, which indicates a total of 63 revisions. i'm not sure whether "winners" were derived from this list either. finally i have a much-better documented spreadsheet from february of 2008, with tower entries up to january 27th of that year; this tower had 342 revisions ("revision" meaning a new song replacing an old song). i also have a tower of albums with the last entry on march 9 of 2008. what i recall is that we ran out of steam on that, and then i drifted away, and then the crash occurred when i wasn't paying any attention.

anyway here is the last tower of song summary:

song survived nominator terminator elapsed
The Kinks - Autumn Almanac 46 MXYZPTLK Homesick 192:55
The Beatles - Rain 45 Miles Aweigh cicadashell 177:01
Television - Marquee Moon 33 Persephone Spastic Minnow 122:03
Marvin Gaye - What's Going On 32 Persephone spidermage 145:25
They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul 31 Spastic Minnow Mr Tein 166:57
Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime 26 the cutter cicadashell 134:41
Iggy Pop - The Passenger 26 spidermage Persephone 75:38
Aimee Mann - I Should've Known 25 LRandall Persephone 120:45
Led Zeppelin - The Rain Song 25 Persephone Persephone 122:15
The Go-Betweens - Cattle and Cane 23 Persephone Mr Tein 45:53
The Mothers of Invention - Flower Punk 23 cicadashell Spastic Minnow 116:50
Etta James - At Last 23 Persephone Persephone 218:24
The Who - Baba O'Reilly 23 Mr Tein spidermage 217:00
Electric Six - Gay Bar 23 Persephone Persephone 80:21

there are actually 14 because of the 5-way tie for 23 revisions.

Wow! Brilliant! thanks for that, Cicada. Autumn Almanac... I am truly surprised... love the song to death, but I can hardly believe that it beats Waterloo Sunset. That a TMBG song and a Go-Betweens song are up on the top there means Spastic and I were plugging hard at our faves! But perhaps it was a different run.

Love your term "terminator"! makes it sound so sinister (.... with so many Steely Dan fans around, how come they didn't end up on the top list? I distinctly remember Simps terminating Do It Again by changing the artist name! Mr. Green )

Hello to all. I found this forum in a roundabout way. I used to post with a different nickname on the Idea site. For a while then I was "deleted member" while my posts still were there, then I came back with this ID to post a few things. But, alas, I am not Alan K Hall....

Other day got out of the blue an email from someone and a bit of nostalgia crept back in! I checked out the Ape forum, registered... they never approved me, and for some reason... I have personal messages from people that I can't even read!

So, I found This Place and while I may not visit too much, wanted to say hello and greet all the folks who I'd known from the Idea forum. Nice to see the names Jeff Truzzi, Simps, Persey, Mr Tein, Cicadashell, Miles, LongingLook and many more. nice to see you are all alive and kicking!!!

Welcome malibu69.

It is no idle cliche to say that I have heard a great deal about you - and never in anything less than warmly affectionate tones. How lovely to 'meet' you at last.

Hee hee, I managed to get Iggy in there.

If I remember correctly, my Jacques Brel entry was only just edged out of the top ten.

It was a great game, and I understand that you introduced it Ms malibu.

Well, that's the second tower. I started it and the songs I opened it with were the top ten from the previous list. So Waterloo Sunset got knocked off rather early because it had already won in the previous tower. You will notice however that "Once in a Lifetime" has your name by it, I believe that's because it did survive from that first 10 and was attributed to you as the originator.

I guess that's one way Cicada could figure out what the top ten of the previous list were, he could find the ten that were "started" by you.

I've got my ears to the ground, my shoulder to the wheel and my nose to the grindstone, but I only have eyes for you. The rest will always be yours for the asking.

I am so happy to see you here, you don't even know. In your glourious honour, I have a special surprise for you. Tonight, look for a thread about The Who, started by Donavan, which I'll bump back up to the top. Its in the garage section. There's something I'm going to post in there (if I can find it!) that will have you laughing yer ass off.

Oh Jeff, that is so sweet, ya guy! It is a weird feeling to know that even if I exist as an "internet identity" or whatever that may be, that there's been a real connection with people, and I am so surprised and honoured to read something like this about me, having the ambiguous feelings I do about over-exposure and revealing things that are "there" and remain there and you may never even finish your discourse, as the experiences you all had in the Idea forum vanishing like that must have been. But then again, a lot of you let me into your lives and I am enriched for that, and have so many memories, it's kind of incredible, actually. I really do feel a lot of affection for you and lots of people and I suppose that expands the dimension a lot more than our defenses allow us to realise. But it can be dangerous too!

Don't tempt me to post much! Stop being so affectionate and sweet!!! I will get addicted!
