Jaysus. Don't pop around here too often and when I do "donavan" is now a peace maker.....DEFENDING XTC?? Swine flu has hit the back porch!!
T.
P.S....."Swine flu has hit the back porch" was a pretty big hit for 'Blind Lemon Jefferson' back in 1928. (Information obtained from Wikipedia) _________________ I don't wanna' be here.....!! |

I think it's more of a pandaMICK.
GEDDIT?
Ooh, my sides again......
Absolutely, don. Andy's 'problem' would seem to be that some bands down the years sound a bit like XTC but he can't get any royalties! Everyone has influences, and even in the case of XTC where those took a while to come out they're still there (I don't hear alot of the Beatles, Beach Boys and Judee Sill on 'White Music, for example). Everyone takes stuff and bends it their own way: some more obviously than others but hey ho.
And careful with those sweeping generalisations, Bill...... _________________ A bounder: and proud if it! |

I'd pay good money to hear those artistes interpret White Music. Imagine Neon Shuffle in the style of Fun Fun Fun.
Go on, I SAID IMAGINE IT!!! _________________ Faullty towers |

Sorry - but generalizations are just that - generalizations. These generalizations of mine only really involved a dozen or so parties. Sorry.
XTC always sound like XTC (wow, what a brilliant statement). So many times other people you're in a band with bring out something in your own playing that would otherwise go untapped. This is very much the case with early XTC. Terry's loving The Pink Faries, Andy's respect of Can, Colin's love of Free and Barry's admiration of Gilbert & Sullivan not withstanding. Band members tend to filter these influences and the songs usually dictate as such.
And I like Blur and FF not so much because they partially sound like XTC but because I just like them, their approach and their songs (seemingly a given).
I still remember an article in Spin magazine in 1986/7 reviewing the "Grass" single (pre-"Dear God" hysteria) was titled "Andy Partridge awaits your copy of 'Pet Sounds'" and being just over 10 years old not getting the reference. The Beach Boys are now my favorite band (aside from XTC and The Replacements of course). _________________ I've Been Up With The Larks... |

I get music channels on my Comcast cable network, including 3 Alternative channels. Last week, on the channel called "Classic Alternative," they played Senses Working Overtime and, 2 days later, Dear God. Obvious choices, but its better than any radio channels in my town. Right now they just finished playing Echo and the Bunnymen's "Killing Moon" and are now playing Squeeze's "Black Coffee in Bed."
One disappointment. The channel just shows pictures of the rock group accompanied with some facts, like MTV's pop up video's facts. However, for XTC, and with a minority of songs, they just post stock pictures of some random rock fans out and about at clubs in the 80's. Thus, no XTC pictures. The facts are unmemorable.
It's playing Talking Heads and, now, starting Jane's Addiction, both of which get plenty of play, so much that I'm tired of looking at Perry Farrell's face _________________ "a little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants,"

I also just saw "Senses" on yet another New Wave compilation album recently, this one released through Target stores. _________________ ...in my pants |

I apologize in case this has been posted somewhere else before. Harry (Andy's son) animated this "Rock Band - I Can't Believe It's Not the Beatles" and his dad's band makes an 'appearance' at around minute 0:52. I love his renditions - the pouty Colin and happy/toothy Dave.
Rock Band - XTC? *sighs* If only:
