I may have found a very obscure Andy/XTC reference to the Fuzzy Warble track "Motorcycle Landscape" in a comic book. At least the song came to mind immediately when I read it.
I just picked up a trade paperback of Hellblazer (John Constantine) comics called "Rare Cuts" that I hadn't read before.
In the story a grown Constantine is visiting the site where a horrible event in his past occurred (a failed exorcism in which a child was sent to Hell), an abandoned nightclub which now sits condemned amidst an auto scrapyard. And in this rusting "Automobile Landscape" John leans on an old car door and out pops a dolls arm-- which falls into a murky puddle, which John has to pause and look at before continuing onto the club.
"Motorcycle Landscape" Lyrics: Modern Hanging Gardens grown from Babylon seeds. While rust pram baby batter sculptures covered in weeds. The grass on the verge has gone old pubic grey and the children in cement bag clothes won't hurt you if you pay. For there is a doll's arm floating in the scum and it's calling you over while it's calling you a bum.
The story was published in Hellblazer 11 in 1988, "Motorcycle Landscapes" appeared on the fanclub cassette "Jules Verne Sketchbook" in 1987. I'm thinking the author, Jamie Delano, might have a copy. _________________ ...in my pants |

Heard on BBC Radio 2 this evening - Andy Partridge coming in on Monday to talk about the Dukes of Stratosphear re-releases. Nothing much more on the BBC web site:
The Radcliffe & Maconie Show

Always worth a listen, of course. The show is on 20:00 to 22:00 BST. |

Enjoy.
Why does it not surprise me that Andy has all the 'Hello Children Everywhere' compilation discs? |

I just went to ESPN.com and saw this headline:
Orangethorpe and Lemon
Sadly, it's about the death of Angles pitcher Nick Adenhart a few days ago. _________________ Now we dolly back

In all XTCness I never see/hear anything about XTC anywhere unless I actively look for it (which I seem to do, constantly).
I read an interview in Magnet magazine a few years ago that I notified John
at Chalkhills about (also saw an article on Jellyfish in Magnet around this time too). Anyway.
But it's not 1989, 1992 or 1999 anymore. These are the last years that I experienced a flood of XTC in the press and (with the exception of 1999) on the radio and on MTV.
(faux dramatic longing sigh)
I don't know if Andy's bitter or not (...) but he seems to resent when bands cite XTC as an influence nowadays or sound like XTC circa 79/80. Instead of being complimented - imitation in this case being the sincerest form of flattery - he'll say "we did that then..(insert bitter old man rant here)" as opposed to acknowledging their influence or capitalizing on it or anything.
I personally love Blur and Franz Ferdinand and can't quite figure why XTC fans don't on the grounds that it's similar to XTC (or Andy resenting it - at least in the press). That's like someone disliking XTC because they're not The Beatles.
I know this wasn't the question/original point of post but it's what comes to mind when I think of XTC - today in the music press, etc. _________________ I've Been Up With The Larks... |

I rather like Blur, and don't mind FF at all. _________________ "Indicate precisely what you mean to say" |

I love blur and like FF too. Who are these moaning XTC fans you speak of, Bill?
Blur have only done a handful of tracks that could be considered XTC-ish and even Franz have moved on now. _________________ Faullty towers |

Well that's good to know.
Who are these people? I'll answer your rhetorical question with my rhetorical answer: the same people who dismissed as XTC as being clever and sublime - (ha-ha they won't let me use the dreaded "Q" word assocaited with XTC! Try typing it in and "sublime" will appear - regardless of context. Uh, yeah, that's pretty stupid) - then and later dismiss FF (and Blur ten years ago) now as being XTC rip-offs. As do Dogs Die In Hot Cars who I actually like (although the vocals are a bit much at times).
No, I know a handful of people who feel this way (re: Blur and FF). I don't. They're all somewhat different animals with different functions. _________________ I've Been Up With The Larks... |

Someone on another forum explained he didn't like Skylarking and preferred them when they are more 'pastoral'. Nob. You couldn't get a more pastoral album then Skylarking. If it was anymore pastoral it would be made of wheat. _________________ Faullty towers |

Oh shit can't we just like Xtc for being Xtc. That's why I liked 'em in the first place. Don't care who sounds like 'em. I liked them coz nobody else sounded like them and it turned me on in a music way. It's all a bit messy now we have all grown up. Innit? |
