Birth of a Nation by D. W. Griffith

Here's a scene:

(Finding the first two with 'safe search' off was a tad risky.)

The film's working title was The Clansman (based on the book of the same name).

Here is Roger Ebert's review, from 2003:

. He discusses the movie's racism and the difficulty of evaluating it fairly in the 21st century.

One shouldn't forget that Griffith was the son of a Confederate colonel; that he invented much of the cinema's syntax; and that this particular movie provoked nearly the same amount of controversy Michael Moore's (pseudo-?)documentaries do today.

Read Kevin Brownlow's The Parade's Gone By for an entertaining and detailed contextual explanation.

I've never seen it, but I am told that it is an incredible piece of filmmaking.

As I recall, you can watch the entire movie on YouTube, as well as Way Down East, Broken Blossoms and Intolerance. There are also quite a few Griffith shorts there, including The Musketeers of Pig Alley.

I don't have the money to build a huge movie library or install a home theatre (at least not the way the formats/media keep changing every ten years), so YouTube is a good alternative for paupers like myself, even though the quality of the image leaves much etc. etc.
