I was in San Jose during the Frisco Quake of 1988. That was much, much worse. I remember seeing on the news that overpass that collapsed in Oakland. Horrifying. There were fundraisers year round to help the community recover.
I learned the hard way to go directly under a table during a quake. Everyone should know that.
You mean the Loma Prieta quake that hit the Frisco area in October '89, don'tchya, Kimmers? That certainly was a big one.. (6.9 Magnitude) ..major destruction in parts of SF.. and it brought sections of the Nimitz Freeway down.. double decker freeways in EQ Country.. what a great idea!
I still recall the San Fernando quake of '71(6.6 Mag) being a biggie to me.. fortunately the area near the epicenter was a lot less populated than the area was by '94, of course, so fewer people were seriously effected.. though I do recall that the San Fernando quake also caused a freeway overpass near the epicenter to collapse.. It actually left a greater impression on me than the Northridge quake of '94 (6.7 mag).. though the epicenter of both of those quakes were pretty close to each other, and my distance from them nearly the same.. my being ten years old at the time the '71 quake hit had a lot to do with that, I'm sure.. We lived not far from where I live now, and I remember it rocking me out of bed.. I had a real hard time running to the front door as the floor was rolling back and forth so wildly.. but like I already said, the Whittier Narrows quake in '87 (5.9 mag.) effected us more so than either of those larger ones, due to the fact that we were just a few miles from the epicenter.. for those of you who don't dwell in EQ Country, the thing about being very close to the epicenter of a quake is that the motion you experience tends to be more of a vertical variety, rather than the rolling back and forth kind you feel the further away from ground zero you are.. yikes..

I just noticed that 65 people died during the earlier San Fernando quake, as opposed to 60 during the Northridge quake, and 63 as a result of the Loma Prieta break... so much for my memory and my 'sparser population' theory..
