I've never thought of the songs being too long, but I can see how some might think that. Maybe it is a bit indulgent, but I enjoy it all the same. It's hard for me to think of any other XTC album I can listen to like English Settlement. It has such a unique sound, I think it was one of those albums like Pet Sounds or Sgt. Peppers. It was birthed from some sort of divine inspiration. Haha, I know how that sounds, sorry, I suppose I'm just very biased.

Sorry about the double post, but I'm curious about Heaven Is Paved With Broken Glass. Now, from what I know, there is the original version and the remix. Can the original version only be found on the Ball and Chain single? I know Chalkhills says it is on Rag N' Bone Buffet, and the remix is on Beeswax, but I'm still confused. Can someone just tell me how many versions of this song exist and where they can be found? I'm not doubting Chalkhills, I'm just not sure because my version sounds like it could be a remix. Thanks.

SF - there are 2 versions of Heaven.

1) The original version is still only available on b-side of Ball and Chain and is over 5 minutes if my memory serves correctly

2) Remix version originally issued on Beeswax and it was this version that was subsequently issued on Rag N Bone Buffet - it's duration is around 4 and a half minutes again memory permitting.

Hope that helps.

It does, thank you very much. I will have try to get my hands on the original version now that I know.

Talking of "Heaven..", has anyone got an mp3 version of the original b-side of Ball & Chain? I have the 12" but no damned turntable now! If anyone can help out, it would be appreciated.

Cheers... TC Smile

With all the talk of some of the songs being too long (I personally do not think so), if they had shortened the runtime on some of the songs, perhaps it could have squeezed in some of those B-sides that, in my opinion, could have made the album even greater than it already is. Just think of the inclusion of Tissue Tigers, or Heaven Is Paved..., or Blame The Weather?

Just a thought... Smile

Am I the only one who ISN'T crazy about the aborted Winstanley session version of Ball & Chain?

I absolutely LOVE the version of Punch and Judy that came out of that session. This version of Ball and Chain isn't as good to my ears as the Padgham version. I can't quite put my finger on what it is though....

I'm not too crazy on it either. The drums sound overdubbed in places on the Winstanley version, especially towards the end - I much rather prefer the groove, fluidity & unedited cohesiveness of the Padgham version. Therefore - I'm with you Satsy! Smile
